Cinco Has Arrived!
Jul 28th, 2009 by Jorja

Welcome to our world, little guy!

Cinco came in at a whopping 9 lbs 7 oz, a whole 1.5 lbs bigger than our heaviest before him (Juliet was just barely under 8 lbs). No wonder I was miserably uncomfortable, people! And the fluid, oh the fluid. He was swimming in there. He doesn’t fit into the newborn clothes we have for him and the newborn diapers won’t fit tomorrow, I’m guessing.

Labor and delivery went well. Really fast! Once the Dr. broke my water it only took an hour and a half. I guess that was my compensation for having back labor and contractions for days on end.

And a drumroll please. . . his name. . .

Eli Agustín

A stately name for a stately little guy. The adorable hat with ears up at the top of the post is from the cutest shop on Etsy called Karenisa.

Seth is doing well, thanks for all the supportive comments! Keeping him from whacking his head again is proving to be much more difficult than I had originally thought, however. He purposefully hit Joseph in the head with his own yesterday. I guess it is his best weapon now that I think about it. . . One more trip to the ER and CPS will be knocking down our door. I can see the headlines now: “Parents deny neglect after child suffers three concussions”

I think I’ll buy him a helmet.

No baby yet, obviously. I’m glad we made it through last week’s fiasco without having that complication, however. This is the longest I’ve gone with any of them so far and I have to admit I’m spoiled since my due date isn’t until Saturday. I’ve got an appointment this morning, so we’ll see how that goes. It’s all voodoo and magic, so I’m not sure why they check dilation and effacement anyway.

The kids’ curriculum arrived (the K12 parts of it–Rosetta Stone and Saxon Math are still on their way, I guess). It is all I can do to hold the kids off until school officially starts. If part of the lessons weren’t online I wouldn’t have an excuse for them. They are quite persistent! They’ve read all the supplemental literature already, played with the fun Phonics tile set, and Seth finished up his old Handwriting Without Tears books that I bought him for the summer (because I told him he couldn’t start his new one until the old one was done. The child is meticulous and when he has his mind set on something, there’s no stopping him). I got oodles of school supplies at Target for $13 (finally, I get to buy them!!), a table and cute chairs at IKEA for super cheapo, and a new laptop from the school district (free!). It is super cute–one of those Asus Eee notebooks that really aren’t good for anything except internet use (gasp–a PC, you say?? I know, it is scandalous). It is small and portable, so it will be perfect for their online school work. Rumor has it that we’ll be able to purchase them from the district when the year is over. Since they retail for $400 I’m sure we’ll be offered a really good deal. In fact, Seth prayed last night that he would be able to keep his new school computer forever. . .hah! We’ll see, little man.

It is that time again to renew my hosting for this website and I have to admit, I’m loathed to spend so much on something I’m not sure I can upkeep once school starts (not to mention another infant and two busy little ones who aren’t in school). One of my main beefs is that my favorite uploading tool, Image Well, was washing out my photos, but the most recent version which does not wash them out isn’t free anymore. Jerks. I guess what it comes down to is that I’m too lazy to upload them the regular way. I only have so much time on my computer before someone comes and harasses me, ok? Geez.

And just in case you were wondering, I’m writing this at 5:30 am whilst washing a chocolate chip cookie down with a V8. I see Rolaids in my future.

MRI anyone?
Jul 21st, 2009 by Jorja

Is it in When Harry Met Sally where Billy Crystal’s character is reaching some mid-life milestone and all he wants for his birthday is an MRI?

Seth is way beyond the curve because he has now had three CT scans and an MRI of his little brain and he’s only five. It’s all very exciting, I tell you, especially when you consider the fact that I could be going into labor at any moment. It turns out that even a small bump on top of a recent concussion can be really bad.

Luckily, we knew he was in good hands. The ER here sent him to the children’s hospital in Salt Lake City which is one of the best.

He’s home now and Catherine is happy to be on duty sitting with him and making sure he doesn’t fall off the couch since his balance is still lacking. I guess on some deeper level I’ve always known how close all the kids are, but it becomes really evident when one of them is gone or sick for any amount of time. Even Juliet was distressed with his absence (and Daddy’s, of course).

There’s no way of knowing how long it will take him to recover, but I have been reading that moderate brain activity is best, nothing too stimulating. How do you tell a 5 yr old who reads way beyond normal grade level to slow it down? Should I let him watch movies for a month? On a related note, I received UPS notification that the kids’ curriculum is in the mail! 70 lbs worth of it:) Yippee!!

Still no name for Cinco, BTW. TIny bit stressed about that.
