Life’s Surprises
May 31st, 2009 by Jorja

Life is always full of little and big surprises and you never know when or what they will be. Sometimes they are good things like running into an old friend in a place you’d never suspect or your computer magically healing itself. Sometimes they are bad surprises like changes at work or a gallon of spilled milk on your kitchen floor. Preparing emotionally for said “bad” surprises isn’t really possible. It is just something you have to chew and swallow the best way you know how.

Seth spent the afternoon having a CT scan on Friday because he fell and whacked his head so hard that he lost his short-term memory. On the one hand it was very frightening, but on the other we just did what we had to do to make sure he was taken care of. You just do it. That’s life and I think that’s what we all do to make it through.

CT scan

He improved quickly though and he’s doing much better now! He sort of remembers the day it happened and his short term memory is back (he told me that he now remembers that trees grow from the ground. . .haha). His biggest regret is that Catherine had told him that sitting on the fence was dangerous (only 4 ft high) and he is very sad about that. I told him that it was okay and not to feel bad, but he told me very sternly, “No, mom. It’s not okay.” Clearly this was a memorable part of the experience for him.

He’s just the cutest thing in the world. When he was really confused he kept asking for his older sister, which I thought was so sweet. Meanwhile she was here at the house wanting to be with him.

He is still a little bit loopy. Very endearing, I tell you. I took him to the grocery store and gave him everything he wanted because I just couldn’t bring myself to say no. Today in church he saw that I was hot, so he made me a paper fan. What a good little guy he is! And very well loved by everyone he knows.

It turns out a lot can happen in 8 years:) Of all the things we’ve done, I think our most prized accomplishments are these nutters:

We went camping over the weekend and I just had to take a picture of their feet before they took a LONG bath. We make them take off their shoes to get in the tent, but they tend to forget to put them back on (which totally defeats the purpose of taking them off in the first place, but hey. What can you do?)

Seth wore his footies the entire time, so all the dirt is on those. He’s quite attached to those jammies and they *barely* fit, so I keep having to repair the toes.

After we went camping, I was putting Joseph to bed and he was discussing the names of baby animals with me. We talked about goslings and piglets and other cute farm animals and as he was falling asleep he told me that octopus babies are “octopetes.” *so cute*

Drumroll please. . .

I know you have all been waiting on pins and needles to see what it is I’ve been up to all week. So without further ado, I present:

carseat re-cover

A new carseat cover! Our old one was pink and black which is not exactly the type of thing you’d strap a baby boy into. So I went to work on re-covering (I know, improper usage of a hyphen but recover means something different to me) our old dingy pink one. And when I mean dingy, I mean FILTHY. Mostly due to the fact that Joseph sat next to Juliet from the get-go. All the dirt was from him, I’m pretty sure. Don’t worry, it will have straps and buckles and all that good stuff soon. I didn’t want to assemble it all because I need to clean the straps and the actual carseat itself (can we say crumb fest?). Just wanted to clarify that before the seatbelt Nazi’s came knocking again. . .

I purchased the fabric (Michael Miller’s Groovy Guitar in Boy and Amy Butler’s Full Moon Dot in Slate) from Eden’s Garden of Fabrics on Etsy. They shipped it so super fast, I couldn’t believe it!

I’m currently working on a pattern, or how-to if you will, on re-covering your own infant carseat to sell in my Esty shop. Don’t worry, it will be cheap:) InDesign is kicking my butt, however. I’m tempted to do it in Illustrator, but that would be just ridiculous, I tell you.

Sigh. One baby project down, only 2.5 months to go:)
